Swimsuits for children and babies – how to choose the right one

A swimsuit is often a great choice for babies, children and older girls when swimwear needs to stay in place during play, swimming and long days by the water. Here you will find kids’ swimsuits in different sizes, fits and styles – from simple designs to options with a high neckline or extra coverage when the sun is strong.

When choosing a swimsuit, the fit, material and intended use usually make the biggest difference. For the youngest children, a one-piece style often feels like the safe choice because it sits well and is less likely to move around when your child is active. For older children, small details such as a racerback, adjustable straps or a more sporty cut can matter a lot, especially if the swimsuit is also used for swimming lessons or regular pool visits.

If it is going on holiday, to the swimming pool or being used outdoors on warm summer days, it is a good idea to look for UV protection, quick-drying materials and a fit that gives your child freedom to move.

Which swimsuit suits your child’s age and activity?

What works well for a baby is not necessarily the same as what suits an older child. For little ones, baby swimwear that is easy to put on and take off can be especially practical, for example styles with buttons or a more covered top. A high neckline can also be comfortable if the swimsuit will be worn a lot in the sun.

For preschool-age children, many parents choose a swimsuit with soft straps and good coverage, so it works just as well for paddling pools, the beach and water play in the garden. For older children who swim more actively, a racerback can be a really good option because it fits closely and allows easy movement around the shoulders.

If you are unsure, start with how the swimsuit will be used:

  • For the beach and holidays: choose a swimsuit with UV protection and a little extra coverage.
  • For the swimming pool: look for a style that fits well and keeps its shape in chlorinated water.
  • For younger children: prioritise easy dressing and a fit that stays in place during play.

Swimsuits with UV protection and durable materials

Children’s skin is sensitive in the sun, which is why many parents choose a swimsuit with UV protection as a regular part of the summer wardrobe. Many styles are made with UPF 50+, which helps protect the areas covered by the swimsuit. This is especially useful for beach trips, holidays and other days when your child spends a long time outdoors.

The material also matters for how the swimsuit feels in use. A swimsuit made from nylon and elastane or spandex is usually soft, flexible and quick to dry, so your child does not have to stay in wet swimwear for longer than necessary. It is also an advantage if the fabric can handle both chlorine and salt water, helping the fit and colours stay looking good even after many swims.

In everyday use, this means the swimsuit:

  • dries faster between swims
  • feels more comfortable against the skin
  • keeps its shape better after use in water and washing

If you would like even more coverage on sunny days, it can also be worth looking at UV swimwear, which gives extra protection for children who love playing in the sun for longer.

Size and fit in the girls’ and kids’ swimsuit your child will feel best in

A children’s swimsuit should fit close to the body, but it still needs to feel comfortable. It should stay where it should when your child jumps into the water, swims or plays in the sand, without feeling tight or irritating. Because the material is often stretchy, it can be tempting to size up, but in most cases it makes sense to start with your child’s current size and measurements.

If the swimsuit is too big, it may slip down, fold or feel heavy when wet. If it is too small, it may feel tight across the shoulders, around the legs or over the body. This is especially true for one-piece swimsuits, where the body length has a big influence on whether the fit feels right.

For babies and younger children, soft edges and a flexible fit are often the most comfortable choice. For older children, wider straps, a racerback or a little more support can feel better. If you are unsure whether your child will be most comfortable in a swimsuit or a two-piece option, you can also take a look at bikinis for older children, where movement and changing can sometimes be easier.

Get swimwear ready for the beach, holidays and pool days

A good swimsuit is often only one part of what your child needs around the water. For the beach or pool, it often makes sense to add a sun-protective hat, lightweight shoes and other practical accessories, so your child is well dressed before and after time in the water. Many parents choose swim hats for the sunniest hours and swim sandals, which are comfortable on warm sand, by the pool or in the changing room.

If you would like a quick overview of several types of swimwear for children, you can also continue to swimwear, where you will find more options for different ages and needs.

At House of Kids, the selection is chosen with children’s everyday life in mind. Swimwear should feel comfortable to wear, allow room for movement and stand up to holidays, water play and plenty of swims. That makes it a little easier to find a swimsuit that is just right for your child.
