Swim top

Swim shirts for babies and children with a focus on sun protection and freedom of movement

A swim shirt is a lightweight swim top for babies and children, designed to feel comfortable on beach trips, during pool play and on sunny holiday days. Many parents choose one because it gives extra coverage across the shoulders, back and arms, where children’s skin is often exposed to a lot of sun. In this category, you will find baby swim shirts, kids’ swim shirts and UV swim shirts in different lengths, fits and colours, making it easier to choose a style that suits your child’s age, activity level and needs.

For the youngest children, a soft and stretchy style is often the best choice. It should feel comfortable when your child is sitting in the sand, splashing at the water’s edge or being lifted in and out of the water many times. For older children, it is usually more important that the swim shirt allows easy movement and can keep up with hours of swimming, beach games and pool fun. Look for UV protection, quick-drying fabric and a fit that stays in place without feeling tight.

Which swim shirt is best for your child’s age and activities?

What works well for a baby is not necessarily the right choice for a preschool child or an older child. For children aged 0-2 years, a swim shirt is often best in a soft, lightweight quality with plenty of stretch, so it is easy to put on and take off, even when wet. Many parents also choose extra coverage for little ones, as they often move between playing in the water and sitting still in the sun.

For children aged 3-6 years, a more durable swim top can be practical, preferably with flat seams and a fit that stays in place while they run, jump and play. Older children often prefer a simple style that feels light in the water and is easy to match with swim trunks or swim shorts, depending on what they like to wear.

It is also worth considering where the swim shirt will be used the most:

  • For beach days, many choose a long-sleeved style for more sun protection.
  • For the pool or swimming lessons, a short-sleeved swim shirt can feel lighter and freer.
  • For holidays and long days outdoors, UV swimwear with a high protection factor often gives extra peace of mind.

UV swim shirts, materials and details that make a difference

A UV swim shirt is typically made from a blend of polyester or nylon and elastane. It feels different from cotton, but these are exactly the materials that make a swim shirt work well in water. It dries quickly, is flexible to move in and keeps its shape, even when used again and again. Elastane adds stretch, so your child can play, swim and move freely without feeling restricted.

Many parents look for UPF or UV50+, as this gives a clear indication of the level of sun protection. This can be especially reassuring if your child has sensitive skin, or if you know you will be spending many hours close to the water. Details such as raglan sleeves, which often allow good movement around the shoulders, and flat seams, which feel more comfortable against the skin, are also worth noticing.

If the swim shirt will be used in both chlorinated water and salt water throughout the summer, durability also matters. A quick-drying fabric and a good elastic quality make a noticeable difference in everyday use, because your child does not have to walk around in cold, heavy, wet swimwear afterwards.

How to choose the right size in a swim shirt

It is completely normal to be unsure about sizing. A kids’ swim shirt should usually fit fairly close to the body, as this makes it feel more comfortable in the water and helps it stay where it should. It should not feel tight across the stomach, shoulders or around the neck.

It can be tempting to choose a size up if your child is growing quickly. However, a swim shirt that is too loose can become heavy when wet, and it may offer less protection if it rides up. On the other hand, a style that is too small will quickly become uncomfortable to wear. If you are unsure, it can help to check your child’s measurements in cm rather than choosing by age alone.

A simple rule of thumb is:

  • Babies are often most comfortable in extra-soft and flexible styles.
  • Active toddlers usually benefit from a close fit that stays in place during play.
  • Older children often prefer a light, simple fit, as long as it still sits properly.

Complete the swim set for the beach, pool and summer days

A swim shirt is rarely worn on its own. For most children, it makes sense to pair it with a bottom that suits both their age and the way the swimwear will be used. Some children are happiest in a classic set with a swim shirt and swim trunks, while others do better with a more covered option from our selection of UV swimwear. On very sunny days, it is also a good idea to add a swim hat, so the head and face are better protected.

The most important thing is that the swimwear suits the everyday moments and summer days your child will actually use it for. Some mainly need a swim shirt for the pool and swimming, while others will use it for beach trips, water play in the garden or holidays abroad. The right choice is the style that feels good to wear, is easy to move in and works again and again when the sun and water are calling.
