Pyjama sets

Pyjama sets for children and babies that help create calm at bedtime

Pyjama sets are made for the quiet hours, when your child needs to settle down and sleep well. A classic set usually consists of a top or night shirt and a pair of trousers that feel comfortable throughout the night. This category is suitable for both babies and older children, but the right choice often depends on size, material, temperature and whether your child sleeps best in something close-fitting or a little looser.

Many people also call them kids’ pyjamas, children’s nightwear or sleep sets. In practice, the difference is usually small. The most important thing is that the nightwear feels soft against the skin, does not irritate and suits your child’s age and sleep needs. For the youngest children, sleepsuits can be a good alternative, while a two-piece pyjama set often becomes more practical when the child is ready for it.

At House of Kids, we have gathered a selection of children’s pyjama sets that are comfortable to wear, easy for everyday routines and made to withstand many washes.

Size matters more in pyjama sets than you might think

It can be tempting to choose pyjama sets in a slightly larger size so they can be used for longer. But nightwear that is too big can quickly disturb sleep. Trouser legs can twist, sleeves can slide down over the hands, and a top can fold and feel uncomfortable when your child turns over in bed.

A good pyjama set should follow the body in a comfortable way without feeling tight. Especially for babies and younger children, it is helpful to choose a calm, easy fit, elastic that keeps its shape and cuffs at the wrists and ankles that stay where they should without squeezing. If your child is between two sizes, it is often better to look at height and body shape rather than age alone.

As a simple rule of thumb, it is time to change size when the nightwear:

  • feels tight around the stomach or shoulders
  • rides up on arms or legs during sleep
  • feels difficult to put on and take off
  • no longer allows free movement

For the youngest children, a bodysuit or another soft inner layer can also be comfortable if your child sleeps in a cool room or finds extra calm in something that sits a little closer to the body.

Materials in pyjama sets: cotton, softness and the right warmth

The material matters a lot when nightwear is worn close to the skin night after night. It should feel pleasant, even after many washes, and still keep its shape so it is just as comfortable at bedtime as when it was new.

Cotton is an obvious choice for children’s nightwear because it is soft, breathable and easy to care for in everyday life. Organic cotton can be especially nice if you are looking for pyjama sets for a child with sensitive skin. Cotton blends with a little stretch can also work very well, as they give extra freedom of movement when your child turns and moves in their sleep. On cooler nights, a slightly warmer quality can feel good, while lightweight jersey is often ideal when the bedroom is warm.

If you are unsure, you can start with how your child sleeps:

  • Children who sweat a lot often do best in light and breathable nightwear.
  • Children who get cold easily may benefit from a closer and slightly warmer quality.
  • Children with sensitive skin often feel most comfortable in soft, simple materials without too much inner texture.

For children who need a little extra warmth close to the body, wool underwear can also be a good extra layer during the colder months.

How many pyjama sets does a child need?

It is a very relevant question, because the need changes quickly with both age and everyday routines. Nightwear is often in constant rotation between wear, washing and changes after small accidents, so most families need more than one or two sets.

A good starting point is:

  • Babies: often 3-5 pyjama sets, as spit-up, leaks and other small accidents happen more easily.
  • Toddlers: typically 2-4 sets depending on laundry routines and individual needs.
  • Older children: often 2-3 sets is enough, especially if the child does not change every night.

If you have several children, or you do not wash clothes very often, it can be helpful to have a few extra sets in the drawer. This is also where quality makes a difference. A pyjama set that keeps its shape, colour and elastic wash after wash is usually the one you instinctively reach for again at bedtime.

Pyjama sets should suit both the season and your child’s own preferences

Some children sleep best in something light and airy, while others prefer long sleeves and long legs all year round. That is why the right choice is not only about the season, but also about the temperature in the bedroom and how your child feels at night.

Long pyjama sets are often a safe choice for most of the year, while lighter sleep sets and shorter styles can be comfortable on warm summer nights. As children get older, the look often starts to matter more too. Little ones usually do not mind, but school-age children often like to help choose colours, prints or a more simple style without motifs.

If you want to make evenings and mornings a little cosier and more practical, pyjamas can easily be combined with soft slippers for cold floors and products from the nightwear and underwear category if you would like more options for bedtime.
